I'm happy with it. Getting a top 6 forward would have been great and is still a need, but getting a potential franchise goalie > getting one potential top 6 forward.

I hope they split close to 50/50 this year, and honestly, if Schneider starts playing at a higher level than Marty (wouldn't surprise me), I hope we don't just keep starting Marty just because of who he is, especially in the playoffs.

Ideally I see this unfolding in a similar fashion to Osgood and Howard.

I love the Schneider trade. Marty is a HOF but he is 41 yrs old and has had injuries and next season is condensed.

I was at the draft; had a great time. From booing Bettman, to the chants of Marty is better when Roy was on stage, to the trade. I thought it was the 9th pick + for Bobby Ryan. I like this trade more.

I think once the realization sets in that Schneider is better than Marty at this stage Schneider will start 50-55 games. Marty sounded in an interview yesterday like he is mentally prepared for a lesser role, calling it a "different role". It is what it is. Schneider is one of the best five goalies in hockey right now. He has to play the majority of games if any kind of objectivity is being used.

When this was announced it was tough to swallow because, as a life long Devils fan, you begin to realize the end is near for Marty. That's really hard to imagine and come to terms with, but Lou did the right thing.

But by not drafting a forward, and by drafting a defensemen with their 2nd, I have to believe Lou might package one of Merrill, Urbom or Gelinas in a deal for a top 6 forward. Improving the goaltending is great, but last time I checked Schneider can't score goals. You'd have to think one of those young prospects gets moved for an upgrade on the wing.

good deal for devils, now with taking on schneiders salary what does this do to clarkson situation. i am sure it doesnt help. would jersey be looking for depth players, young high end prospects, draft picks. with giving up a top ten pick that has to be replaced. in edmonton we have lots of what devils looking for. think we could swing something. good luck with schneider. it was the right move at the time. we just can figure out vancouver who could have had the 7th pick for schneider. new jersey = good management, vancouver=a nightmare. hope louongo decides to retire this year and we could all have a good laugh.

Would love to trade Clarky's rights but i doubt Lou does it. Not his style if he has any interest in resigning the guy. Which he does from what i've heard but i feel that he's all but gone just like Todd.

Totally unexpected. Great for the devils. Schneider is a classy guy just like Brodeur. I'm a little worried that he'll be frustrated as a backup for another year (he really deserves to be a starter), but hopefully he takes it in stride and learns all that he can from the best goalie ever.

Also, now the devils can be totally focused on building a functioning offense. All of the other pieces are in place, and they know exactly how much cap space they have to work with.

The rumor chart shows Byfuglien at 60% for New Jersey. I'd be happy if that's Lou's next big move.

I think he'll realize this situation is different, because Brodeur is likely on his last year.

I still can't say I love this deal and it's not the idea that we got robbed but I'm not sure if we had bigger needs. Listen as most have noted Schneider was probably worth more then the #9 pick in the draft. Also, Cory looks like he'll be a pretty good #1 goalie, maybe even for another 8-10 years. I just look at the Devils organization as a whole and the Devils don't have any upper echelon offensive talent. Reid Boucher is the closest but he's really not the greatest of skaters. Maybe he'll become a Brett Hull 'lite' or he could be the next Robbie Schremp. What the Devils do have is a bunch of good defensive prospects and some decent goalie prospects. Yes, finding a true #1 goalie is hard but I still think the Devils had time to find Marty's replacement or even a 2yr "stop-gap" until one of the kids might be ready (still think Wedgewood is going to be real good). I would of love to see the Devils draft Nichushkin, who some compared to Malkin and play him with Lokti and Kovy. Some were scared that he might go back to Russia if he didn't make the team but with the Devils forwards your saying he couldn't beat out Tedneby, JJ or Barch (ok maybe not Barch ) plus the Devils might have some open spots anyway if Clarkson or Elias leave. He's the kind of top-end talent the Devils lack. With the trade for Cory and drafting more defenseman the Devils look like they will try and win every game 1-0 like last year. Again, I believe this wasn't a "bad" trade but maybe a trade the Devils didn't need to make right now.

So Schneider is in the same situation all over again.
Can't wait for Brodeur to say he isn't retiring anytime soon.

I don't really know much about Schneider as i don't follow the west teams to much, but one thing that worries me is when he becomes our starter will he be able to handle the heavy workload? What if he's just a good backup?
I trust Lou but i hope this doesn't come back to bite us in the ass.

I think it should be very clear to Marty that if he's coming back next year, its as the backup.

I don't agree with you that Brodeur will be the starter in the playoffs. Schneider is the better goalie right now and Brodeur is another year older. I think Schneider is going to get more starts and be the starter in the playoffs.
